The legislature met on April 22 to consider Governor Ralph Northam’s proposed amendments, vetoes and changes in the budget. Governor Northam has proposed freezing or reversing all new funding added by the legislature in its session earlier this year. The coronavirus has put many environmental initiatives at risk.
On February 14, Governor Ralph Northam announced plans to mitigate harm to 25,000 shorebirds whose nesting area has been destroyed to accommodate the expansion of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT). The Governor’s announcement came following weeks of protests by individuals and organizations from around the country, including ASNV, the National Audubon Society and the American Bird Conservancy.
The Virginia General Assembly is now in session and considering several thousand bills. In the conservation area, there are bills addressing tree preservation, climate change, energy conservation, plastic pollution, water quality and more. Many committees are headed by Northern Virginians this year.
