The Virginia General Assembly is now in session and considering several thousand bills.  In the conservation area, there are bills addressing tree preservation, climate change, energy conservation, plastic pollution, water quality and more.  Many committees are headed by Northern Virginians this year.

Two historic development projects are underway on U.S. 1 (called Richmond Highway there) in the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County ; the widening of the highway and a redevelopment called “Embark.” These projects will make major changes to the corridor.

ASNV recommended using bird-friendly design features in a proposed new building at the Humphreys Engineer Center in Fort Belvoir. Features include bird-safe windows and lighting design and landscaping with native plants. The letter noted that the site is surrounded by second-growth forest, is in the drainage area for Dogue Creek and upstream of the Jackson Abbott Wildlife Refuge in that watershed, and is part of a forested corridor linked to Huntley Meadows Park.
