About This Team
The Scarlet Teenagers is made up of five members of the Teen Birding Club: Amiel Hopkins, Nick McWilliams, Joseph Priniotakis, Evan Demsey, and Bridget Frank. Amiel Hopkins’ photograph received the Honorable Mention Award in the National Audubon Society Photography Awards! Their team was chauffeured by Mr. Fred Atwood, a biology teacher at Flint High School in Oakton who leads the Teen Birding Club. The team started at G. Richard Thompson Wildlife Management Area and ended at Great Marsh Trail at Elizabeth Hartwell National Wildlife Refuge. Their route was designed by Amiel Hopkins to cover Fauquier, Loudoun, and Fairfax counties. These teens got up early and birded from 5 AM to 9 PM on Saturday, May 6, and counted 105 species! We are so proud of them! While the students are not allowed to fundraise in school club activities, Mr. Atwood generously pledged $4 per species, and donated $420 to ASNV on behalf of his team! Amiel credits Mr. Atwood for not only encouraging his passion for birding but also influencing how he views nature and life. Please join me in making a donation to the Scarlet Tanagers to celebrate youth birding and the adults who inspire our young people to become the next generation of birders and environmental stewards.
