Join us online to hear game designer and birder Elizabeth Hargrave speak about how she started birding, her journey to create the award-winning game Wingspan, its rise to popularity, and its impact. She also will discuss what she is working on now and her favorite nature-themed board games.
Wingspan is a competitive, card-driven, board game, the 2019 winner of the prestigious Kennerspiel des Jahres Award, an international award honoring family-friendly, board games. Each of the 180 unique bird cards in the original game accurately and beautifully depicts a real bird species and offers a fun fact about the bird, in addition to relevant game play information. The game is considered an ‘engine-building’ game, as players collect resources to attract birds to their bird sanctuary and use various “bird powers” to tuck cards (flock), lay eggs, predate other birds, and more in a quest to earn the most points by the end of the game.
Elizabeth Hargrave is a board game designer inspired by a love of nature and a desire to play games that break away from tried-and-true themes. When she is not gaming, you'll often find her hiking, birding, or collecting mushrooms in and around Washington, DC.
