Join Tom Wood, ASNV Board Member and George Mason University Professor, on a guided tour of Hawk Mountain. Dr. Wood has years of experience leading groups of students and adults to enjoy the spectacle and wonder of the hawk migration at this site. The morning will begin with an up-close look at a captive hawk before the group walks to the best viewing sites. Expect to walk about 2-3 miles of moderately difficult terrain. In addition to this exclusive 5-hour guided experience, the course includes a 60-minute pre-trip webinar to introduce you to the migration event and the mountain’s unique geography/geology, and to prepare you to identify various species of raptors. Although it is difficult to predict in advance exactly when the hawks will be migrating, the course date should be around peak migration.
To ensure a positive experience for all participants, we are limiting the number of slots to 16. We expect this rare opportunity to sell out quickly.
Hawk Mountain is a mountain ridge, part of the Blue Mountain Ridge in the Appalachian Mountain chain, located in central-eastern Pennsylvania near Reading and Allentown. The area includes 13,000 acres of protected private and public land, including the 2,600-acre Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association is a global leader in raptor conservation, creating, conducting and coordinating integrated research worldwide. The sanctuary also includes an educational visitor center.
Please note that it is just over a 3-hour drive to the mountain from Northern Virginia, so expect to depart for the mountain by 6:30 AM for an on-time arrival, or arrive the night before and stay nearby. We will help coordinate carpools for those who are interested in reducing carbon emissions. The pre-outing webinar will be offered on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 7:00 PM. All who register for the field trip will receive the Zoom information.
If you can, please consider making an additional donation to help us sponsor a young adult birder to participate in this event.
